And Why I Write for Ear Candy
Note from editor: The follow is Bill's take on the "Stevo Episode".
I scoped out Steve’s website just for grins. The simple fact that he had never heard Susan Tedeschi play live was the first red flag. I guess the Florida music scene is lagging far behind Austin’s. Then, for him to prominently display photos of Michael McDonald, Paul Rodgers, and Cyndi Lauper led me to the ultimate conclusion that: Yep, you’re an oldie! Perhaps he could subtitle his reviews: “From the Where are they now files?” I mean, come on, flashing back and zoning out to the Doobie Brothers? Wow!!! Is that Freedom (Fossil) Rock? Well, dig it up, man!!! I will cut him some slack on Billy Joel. His early music is timeless, in my opinion. He started fading away in the late eighties -- just less than twenty years ago! I wonder what his music would have been like if he could have stayed with Christie Brinkley -- umm, yeah -- but I digress. His piece de resistance, the in-depth coverage of the Aruba Music Festival. Yes, somewhere way far out on the horizon, never actually approaching world class status, is this festival. It ranks painfully far below the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival -- not to mention, the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Hey, Steve, why don’t you go to one of those and write about it?! Unfortunately, many people in the U.S. would have never heard of Aruba if it hadn’t been for the tragic disappearance of Alabama teenager, Natalie Holloway. My advice to Steve is to sell the website he already has to online advertisers. See how much they think it is worth. Then, and only then, should he start asking for money. Oh, and by the way, I am not independently wealthy (financially). I do, however, believe that true wealth is relative. The wealth I seek is knowledge, finding new talent, and exposing others to new artists who are truly on the cutting edge of the music scene. The return I get from this wealth, is far better, and lasts far longer than any financial reward -- in my humble opinion.
